Ouachita Mountain Hikers

Ken Schultz Tribute

Ken Schultz could giggle like a girl. He guffawed and chortled-- laughing always with such joy. He gave wonderful hugs and told us stories of his young years on a farm in Wisconsin that was still without electricity when he left, walking to town, at 18, to join the army. He silenced the Tuesday hiking group as he talked of the "lard" sandwiches he and his brothers took to school each day for lunch. He was as good a listener as he was a talker, which is a rare find in this day and age.

For the Ouachita Mountain Hikers, he frequently acted as hike leader whenever needed. He ran the Gulpha Gorge clean-up 4 times a year and picked up trash in the campground on off months on his own.  At his home in Hot Springs Village, he fed hoards of wild turkeys. He worked at keeping up his church and sometimes he went back to Wisconsin to help his son paint homes that were being remodeled. Ken also volunteered once a week at the Clinton Center in Little Rock.

He loved his family and greatly enjoyed phone calls from his grandchildren. And, of course, he loved to hike and to be in the woods. He was a wonderful member of our hiking community and he is sorely missed.
